4-7-8. Do you know what this means? It is a breathing exercise that helps to decrease anxiety, stress, and promote relaxation.
To use the 4-7-8 technique, focus on the following breathing pattern:
empty the lungs of air
breathe in quietly through the nose for 4 seconds
hold the breath for a count of 7 seconds
exhale forcefully through the mouth, pursing the lips and making a “whoosh” sound, for 8 seconds
repeat the cycle up to 4 times
As the pandemic continues on a second wave and countries are either locking down or implementing a modified lock down stress levels are understandably rising for many. I have recently started doing this breathing technique and have found it helpful to promote calmness.
This past weekend I took a short trip to the countryside to relax. My love for nature and the sense of peace away from the city was just what I needed to feel calm. Also, I love roadtrips! For anyone that has not taken one I'm sharing below a couple of suggestions on planning and making the journey as enjoyable as the destination.
Print or download a map. Ensure that if for some reason you lose connection you are able to still navigate to your destination.
Flashlight, blanket, spare car battery. In an emergency ensure that you have some basics to get you through a wait period if you need help.
Snacks and water. I love trail mix, chips, and granola bites. Have some snacks for the road. Sometimes when driving through the countryside I'll stop by a farmer's market for fresh fruit!
Playlist. I set up a playlist of songs I love. Some are energetic dance songs others slow melodies. Reception to radio stations can be spotty at times so I love having my playlist.
Keep an open mind and relax! This is the most important "tip". At times we may get lost or the weather doesn't cooperate. Focus on enjoying the positives and know that whatever little challenge arises it's all part of the experience.
Wishing you a beautiful journey filled with calm and happiness!
